Why didn’t Joe Montana start? The "Quarterback Controversy" between him and Steve Young hadn’t started yet.

A dogfight of a game with ferocious hitting, no doubt about that!
Saints would go 12-3 in 1987 – a strike-shortened year, while 49ers offense and defense ruled the NFL in all relevant statistics. They won the West title again with a 13-2 record.
Unreal team speed from both clubs. Says a lot for San Francisco’s blocking that they could just successfully run right into the teeth of that New Orleans front seven.
Ironically, both teams toppled by the Vikings in the playoffs that year.

They Saints missed a 52 yard field goal at the end of the game in the previous meeting that season that would have won the game.

Remember those years as a Saints fan. So frustrating how conservative we were, but we had to be because we were so offensively challenged . Always having to settle for FGs more often then not.

We did not beat the 49ers very often, but even their fans have to admit that from 87-92 the Saints gave San Francisco all they could handle every season. I just wish Jim Mora hadn’t handcuffed the offense and tried to sit on leads in the second half of playoff games. So many times I watched this team dominate people in the first half and then second half would start and it was like we were trying to run out the clock with 30 minutes left in the game. This group deserved at least one playoff win instead of going 0-4 in the playoffs. Pure tragedy to see such great teams wasted in the post season.
