The sad thing is that this was the beginning of the end of the OIlers as a playoff team and in the city of Houston in general. They had just clawed their way from a 1-4 start and won 11 in a row. They had a 10 to 0 lead and like usual for Houston in the playoffs they always always fell apart in the end. Once the Chiefs won, that was it for Houston. They were stupid and traded Warren Moon who guided the Vikings to the playoffs and thought Cody Carlson was the answer. He wasn’t and the Oilers would go 2-14. The Oilers put everything they had for that one last season to challenge the AFC and the Cowboys, but as usual they choked.

Can you not say who won in the title? Some of us like to watch old games without knowing who won, makes it more exciting.

The Texans need to purchase the Oilers name, logo, and uniform rights and become the Houston Oilers again. It’s only because Bud Adams threw a temper tantrum about a new stadium in Houston and ripped the franchise out and moved to Nashville.

When football was normal. No instant replay after every obvious score.

It makes me laugh when I think about how the Bills of this era were regarded as the biggest chokers ever. Hey, at least the Bills won playoff games and made four Super Bowls. What did this stacked Houston team ever accomplish? Nothing. The Oilers were much bigger choke artists than the Bills were.

montana has lost it by now but valiantly gave his all for a last good season…

  7. Craig Willis on February 27, 2020 at 10:54 pm

Oilers never had good strategy or fancy plays like a lot of other teams. Texans are the same.

25 years later they beat the chiefs in the wildcard round, cant believe how much the oilers franchise was a failure

Beautiful uniforms of the Oilers. Love the colors. Colombian Blue.

  11. Ultrametric on February 27, 2020 at 11:00 pm

This was an historic game. Last win for Joe Montana. Last straw for Houston fans. Last appearance of Warren Moon in Houston. End of the run-and-shoot as a viable offense. End of the Buddy Ryan style of defense. End of Buddy Ryan more or less. That was good riddance 🙂 Sad to see a good guy like Jack Pardee get caught up in it.

I Remaber this game i was so happy Joe Montana won… I could not stand Warren Moon LOL

  18. cacable7 on February 27, 2020 at 11:04 pm

The NFL is a propaganda machine. Only Joe Montana would get credit as a QB for winning this game. The defense sacked Moon 9 times and held the Oilers to 73 rushing yards. Montana threw 2 picks, not even 300 passing yards on almost 40 attempts, but the NFL wants you to think he’s the hero. Just like his Super Bowl wins on loaded teams with defenses that gave up 21, 16, 16, and 10 points; 3 of those against the #1 scoring offense in the league that year. Montana never made the playoffs without a top 10 defense, and never won a playoff game if the other team got to 28. Never even made the Super Bowl without the 49ers loaded organization propping him up.

  19. VonAllen Sports on February 27, 2020 at 11:05 pm

Only a year removed from the 2-point conversion, otherwise that drive at the end by Moon would’ve been more intense.

  20. Kyle Spade on February 27, 2020 at 11:07 pm

26:34 jesus they used "Gate" for every psuedo scandal back then. Somethings never change.

  21. Hugh Betcha on February 27, 2020 at 11:07 pm

My heart still sinks watching this almost thirty years ago. The Oilers had such a talented team and they alway came up short. At least they made one Super Bowl appearance as the Titans.

  27. Joseph Watts on February 27, 2020 at 11:13 pm

The reason they lost this game was bad coaching they ran the run and shoot offense that you don’t see today and buddy Ryan’s defense that would have been eaten alive by an experienced QB that why you don’t see that offense or that defense ran today. I thought the Oilers uniforms were ok but I like the Texans uniforms better

People that know Montana if 1 but damn Moon was amazing

  32. mundty on February 27, 2020 at 11:20 pm

Who is the Oilers head coach here? Ryan is the DC, Gilbride the OC, it seems like? I’m in the third quarter, and unless I’ve missed it, I’m not sure they’ve even referenced the Oilers head coach. Where is he? Much more emphasis placed on Ryan.

  33. cc l on February 27, 2020 at 11:20 pm

Started 1-4, reeled off 11 in a row, unexpectedly, to go 12-4. Like the best record in franchise history to my knowledge. Overcame the tragic death of Jeff Alm during the season. Set up probably the most anticipated playoff expectations and still lost, at home, one win away from the ACF championship game. This one hurt and was never recovered from. the 99 titans superbowl loss to the rams, I did not know how to feel about that. 5 months later the Houston Rockets helped us forget about all that. Until then, we were as a city thoroughly convinced that our sports history, dating back to the sixties, was cursed. The Rockets too put together a string of playoff seasons around the same time period like the oilers did (86/87 – 93) with much underwhelming results (86 finals not withstanding).

  34. ALF Raydough on February 27, 2020 at 11:20 pm

What’s sad is when Warren Moon was let go, the Oilers died with him. He was without a doubt, the Face of the Houston Oilers.

  43. Four Sword on February 27, 2020 at 11:41 pm

The continual collapses by Moon led Oiler squads from 88 through 93, are incredibly entertaining. No one choked like Moon. Total loser.
