49ers Free Agency Grades: Armstead Extension, Jerick McKinnon Restructure & DeForest Buckner Trade

San Francisco 49ers free agency grades take a look at all the signings the 49ers have made. While the 49ers entered free agency with little money to spend, they’ve been able to re-sign Arik Armstead, Jimmie Ward, Ronald Blair, Shon Coleman and re-structure a deal for Jerick Mckinnon. The Niners also made a splash when they traded DE DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts. Host Thomas Mott hands out his grades for the 49ers free agency moves through day 2 of NFL Free Agency.

Arik Armstead’s extension is perhaps the most notable move the 49ers made, signing Armstead to a 5-year, up to $85 million with $48.5 million of that being fully guaranteed. The 49ers also brought back Ronald Blair, a favorite of DC Robert Saleh. Blair adds depth to the defensive line after losing DeForest Bucker and despite coming off an ACL tear has proven he can be a role player.

Who will be the next 49er to sign? Will the 49ers work out an extension with George Kittle? Can San Francisco move enough money around to keep Emmanuel Sanders? It seems hard to be able to do both, however, GM John Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan have already made some great moves this offseason.

McKinnon is a good low risk move. They obviously think he’s healthy, or at least healthy enough to take the low risk. I think they only tendered Brieda in hopes of getting a compensatory 2nd rounder and I believe they may be right and some team will pick him up for that relatively small price. I also think they may still dump Coleman or trade him. Finally, I think you’re dead wrong on Blair. He is going to be key to making up for the loss of Buckner and the coaches believe in him big time. Clearly, if our defensive line coach believes, you should too Thomas. I give both moves B+’s.

With the 13th pick I would draft the best Defensive back or the best D-lineman available. As I said before, I would have let Ward walk and drafted Xavier McKinney with the 13th pick if he falls that far. I would let E. Sanders walk as well. Trade the 31st pick for more picks and draft a wideout in the second or third round.

Coleman can go. 5.5 million in non guaranteed money for a back that had 2 good games.

  16. Richard HART on August 22, 2020 at 2:24 am

I would go Receiver at 13, O-Line at 31. Jerry Jeudy, or CeeDee Lamb at 13, than Ceaser Ruiz at 31, or trade black at 31, and get a second, and 3rd. In that case O-Line, then Corner.

B+ the only things that made me scratch my head, was the restructure with McKennon, and the 2nd round tender of Matt Breida. It’s time to cut some of these RB’s the heck loose.

Overall so far, I give the Niners a provisional A grade. I hate losing Buckner, hate it. But hard choices had to be made and they got a pretty good to very good return with the 13th pick. What they do with that pick is what makes my grade provisional. If they screw it up, the grade drops, but is still a C or better. Probably better.

Use #13 to get a STUD Wide Receiver. Now you may be able to trade down a few spots and still get the stud. From what I see in the mock drafts, we could still get Ruggs at 16-20 for example. So if you can trade down just a few picks and pick up a 4th rounder, do it. With Ward signed, you no longer need to look at drafting a safety at 31, so you can definitely trade down and try to parlay into a 2nd and maybe a 3rd (might have to give up one of the late rounders to do it though). Then go ahead and pick up a cornerback or if there is a sleeper OL player that you think will either replace Staley or shore up the interior, do that instead and come back for your cornerback. Honestly, if you could package all your late round picks with the 1st round move, getting 3 quality players would be fine and be done! So if you could keep a mid 1st rounder, and add two 2nd rounders, that would be awesome.

Ward saved our ass in so many games last year W!

  46. philip knappe on August 22, 2020 at 2:55 am

wr at 13 juedy or lamb, corner at 31 and oline with 5-7 picks

  47. jay Marbles on August 22, 2020 at 2:55 am

We better not trade out of the 13th pick. We need a true number 1 WR who can stretch the field. Hence why Jimmy G missed that damn throw cuz we never threw down the field the entire year.

  48. JACK METCALF on August 22, 2020 at 2:55 am

I agree that Ward came a little expensive, so I agree with you there. But I don’t agree with you on letting the 6th best safety who can play any position in the defensive backfield. I just would have liked him for an average of more like $8.5 million average. Still this is a B+ for me, just for a different reason.

  49. kccrownedking8 on August 22, 2020 at 2:57 am

Buckner is light years better than Armstead
