NCAA Football was an American football video game series developed by EA Sports in which players control and compete against current Division I FBS college teams. The series is a younger brother to the Madden NFL series.

In July 2013, the NCAA announced that it would not renew its licensing contract with Electronic Arts because of an ongoing legal dispute regarding the use of player likenesses in the games. However, this contract only covers the use of the NCAA name and related logos, not those of individual schools and conferences, which are negotiated individually or through the Collegiate Licensing Company. The CLC concurrently announced that it would extend its existing licensing deal with EA through 2017, ensuring that EA Sports could continue the series without the NCAA branding. However, the series was placed on hiatus in September 2013, following three major conferences pulling their trademark licenses from EA, and uncertainties surrounding the results of lawsuits involving the use of player likenesses in-game. However, EA Sports is still making an attempt to get the series back going.

Players’ real names and exact likenesses are not used in the game. While the Madden NFL series uses real player names and likenesses, those players are compensated for the use of their image. Due to NCAA restrictions on the amateur status of athletes, names are not allowed. Additionally, current college players cannot be used as cover athletes. Instead, each cover features a player whose college eligibility ended the season before the game’s release, wearing his former college uniform. The only two exceptions have been the Wii version of NCAA Football 09, which featured Sparty, the mascot of Michigan State University, on the cover, and NCAA Football 06 when Desmond Howard was featured on the cover striking the Heisman Trophy pose during his career at Michigan, despite not playing for Michigan for more than 15 years.

Although EA Sports does not claim that the players in the game represent real life players, the jersey number, position, height, weight, home state, and ethnicity are aligned with the real players. Fans of any particular team are sure to recognize their favorite players (for example, in NCAA Football 2014, University of North Carolina Tar Heels QB #2 would correspond to QB Bryn Renner). Actual usage of a player’s real name would be in violation of the NCAA’s policy regarding student athletes. Amateur “roster makers” will often manually associate player names and will upload a roster file to the built-in roster sharing system. As of the 09 release, EA has put in the EA Locker feature which allows remote roster sharing online through either Xbox Live or PlayStation Network depending on the console.

Is EA Sports going to start making NCAA Basketball again too?

  2. Hanzo The Razor on March 10, 2020 at 12:10 am

The rules that must be set up will take at least a year. Now do not think the schools are not going to get a piece of the action, For example Johnny QB goes to a photo shoot for a commercial, if he wears his Jersey or anything with the schools logo then the school must be compensated.
The amount EA will play the players will not be any great amount, but something is better than nothing. The one really bad thing is who will represent the players ( agents), I think the schools will have to provide the players with representation for free. This would prevent the corruption and mismanagement of players interests. For example; I tell Johnny QB that he is going to get him in several commercials and etc. A agent tells Johnny QB takes out a loan or go buy a car and then he gets hurt and is stuck with major debts and the Agent hangs him out to dry.

  5. Music IS Lyfe on March 10, 2020 at 12:11 am

If the “player likeness” issue caused these games to be shut down can anyone explain why ncaa basketball got shut down after NCAA 2010 but NCAA football was able to make games for another 4 years until 2014?! Just curious

  6. Marcellis Fizer on March 10, 2020 at 12:12 am

  22. Bonesaw is ready on March 10, 2020 at 12:32 am

I never understood why they didn’t just keep making it with fake players. Was having them based on the real players really so important that it was better to not have the game at all then to just create made up ones?

  23. Shaq Brown on March 10, 2020 at 12:33 am

    But when tho??!!!

  24. Dada Cortez on March 10, 2020 at 12:33 am

  31. Making Fake News Real News on March 10, 2020 at 12:38 am

There’s three things the president of the NCAA, Mark Emmert, said needed to happen before this title could return to the shelves.

We’re still another year+ before the players even start getting compensation.

And as far as what’s gonna be a priority, it’s first and foremost trying to figure out the best path forward after such a landmark change in NCAA rules. Once the new bylaw takes effect, then compliance and enforcement will be a new opportunity for schools and the NCAA.

So after the compensation starts, amendments will be added on after the first year of implementation as issues arise… it’s safe to expect analysis and changes each year as necessary.

The NCAA, universities, NCAA athletes, big budget athletic departments, and other athletic programs are gonna be in for a huge baptism by fire.

With the current situation, there are still a lot of unknowns. And to get to the point where a profit sharing system is in place for the athletes and their programs, along with EA negotiating distribution and keeping their margins in mind, it’s gonna be years.

Trust me, Ed O’bannon started this whole process and he’s an asshat for doing it. Whether he thought the lawsuit was gonna have merit and be a judgement in his favor, it’s safe to say they weren’t sure and Ed and his legal team were aware of implications.

You’ve got a guy who played on a championship UCLA team in ’96 who was selling cars in Las Vegas, suddenly beside himself that his likeness was used and on a classic team that he just couldn’t sleep at night.

Still not sure if what the judgement was but EA could’ve paid out $1 and still would’ve been finished as the rules stood then.

EA’s NCAA March Madness was really looking better that last year, it definitely had graphics of the 2k/NBA live going and NCAA college football was of course a few years ahead of b-ball.

But imagine now the opportunities with the game and next gen consoles.

I hope it’s sooner rather than later but there’s no need to get your hopes up because at the minimum it’s at least five years.

  32. Reed Thompson on March 10, 2020 at 12:39 am

no the biggest obstacle for ncaa return is ea not listening to the fact that players want a new ncaa game

  33. D D Rod on March 10, 2020 at 12:40 am

Fuck EA, fuck 2K and fuck all game publishers that are fucking us out of our hard earn money. Not buying, shit from neither of these greedy motherfucking companies and their gambling bullshit games. Enough is enough, boycott them all period. We are all tired of the swam of greed. They got a new consoles coming out and people are sick of all these greedy motherfucking game publishers. If I have to give up video gaming all together, so be it. Its been a great run since 2003-present.

Thats great! Hopefull that cheap ass NCAA 14 game should go back to being $8 bucks.

  38. Tom Wolfe on March 10, 2020 at 12:43 am

I mean, why not just have randomized rosters? I never played NCAA because I wanted to play as ________________ on team so and so.

  39. N7 Slayer on March 10, 2020 at 12:44 am

Hell yeah I still play NCAA 14! There’s guys that update the rosters every year so it’s worth playing even to this day. I never got rid of my original copy and seeing how crazy expensive it is now for folks that want to pick it up is down right criminal. All I’m really missing are the uniform packs. I have a few, but not all which sucks.

Make the game free like fortnite!
Then players can sell their "cards" like skins and they get updated for 4 years freshman to senior!

  44. SIR LOIN on March 10, 2020 at 12:55 am

Brynn Renner sucks ass. Thanks for the example though…

  45. Madden franchise Channel on March 10, 2020 at 12:57 am

They haven’t even announced it yet so it’s not confirmed

  46. pwcorgi2000 on March 10, 2020 at 12:57 am

While I theoretically disagree that the players should be paid fof their likeness. They should be honored that they’re being represented in a video game. However, I’m glad that NCAA Football is coming back. Hopefully NCAA Basketball as well.

  47. David on March 10, 2020 at 12:59 am
