Washington Redskins Lose Their Trademark

Would you go up to a Native American person and call him a ‘Redskin?’ Then why do we allow it as a name of a team? Cenk Uygur points out this devastating point that lead attorney Jesse Witten made. Would it be easier and most cost effective in the long term to change the team’s name? What do you think? Tell us in the comments section below.

“The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration, calling the football team’s name “disparaging to Native Americans.”

The landmark case, which appeared before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, was filed on behalf of five Native Americans. It was the second time such a case was filed.

‘This victory was a long time coming and reflects the hard work of many attorneys at our firm,’ said lead attorney Jesse Witten, of Drinker Biddle & Reath.”*

Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) and Gina Grad (http://www.twitter.com/ginagrad. Pretty Good Podcast) discuss this hot topic.

TYT is responsible for 1.5 Armenian deaths in genocide, and you have the audacity to call the redskins "offensive." Liberals are incredibly hateful and filled with hypocrisy

You guys need an IP consultant.  That’s not a "patent."  It’s a trademark.

I’m an American Indian, and a Native American, (know the difference or you have no place on this thread) and that stupid bitch is probably a silver-spooned rich kid who parents get piles of casino money while the rest of the tribe lives on nothing. If anyone deserves to have the name "Washington Redskin", it’s the spoiled bitch who’s filing all of these lawsuits to make a name for herself. Who does she think she is, Al Sharpton?

  12. Michael Madrid on February 19, 2020 at 6:26 pm

This IS NOT about Democrat VS Republican!  This IS NOT about political correctness!  This is a simple request for respect from a much malagined minority.  You don’t see other LIVING cultures being used as sports mascots or having the racial slur for their people used as team names, do you?

  13. EddieHedrick on February 19, 2020 at 6:28 pm

So many butthurt idiots jumping on the liberal bandwagon. There’s no legal way for the name to be changed, so it WON’T CHANGE.

P.S. since when do people go around calling native americans "redskins"? I’ve never heard something so ignorant in my life!

  14. Andrew * on February 19, 2020 at 6:28 pm

I have mixed feelings about this.  I am not Redskin fan but the strong arm tactics of Congress and the government does bother me.  On the other hand words do change meaning of time.  In today’s 2014 pc world Redskins does seem to be
disrespectful. It may not have started out that way but it is popular perception now.  Even the N word started out as a neutral term but how appropriate would that name be today?    Just think of all the new jersey and cap sales if the Redskins do change their name.

  15. jimen94 on February 19, 2020 at 6:29 pm

The term Redskins derived from a GENOCIDAL policy that rewarded 20 pounds silver sterling for the scalp of a native man 10 for a woman and 5 for a child. Proof of the kill was the scalp of a indigenous person. To collect payment you had to show a "Redskin". It’s amazing to me the ignorance scrolling through these comments. For all the slow Anglo-Americans her let me make it simple for you. Seeing how America is responsible for the worlds largest genocide, having a nationally recognized team in America named the Redskins is like going to Germany & there being a team named the Gas Chambers & the mascot being a Jew . But it gets worse. People come to the game dressed as stereotypical Jews & mock their cultural values & religious representations & dress up as them on Halloween & say their honoring them & then have to try and explain & justify to people why it’s offensive. You people disgust me .

Fucking liberal native jerks should be hung by there red skins.

  17. Shaun Martens on February 19, 2020 at 6:32 pm

Everyone watching this should know that the "Young Turks" are named after the Turkish group who committed genocide against the Armenians in 1915.  I’m not in favour of the name "Redskin", but I think even Native Americans would agree that killing 1.5 million civilians is more offensive than any racial slur.  I can’t imagine why Cenk Uygur choose that name, I guess there were already progressive stations named after the SS, and Khmer Rouge.

  18. ron johnson on February 19, 2020 at 6:32 pm

Fuck all the crybabies, they should change the name to the Drunken Injuns! Settle down chief and I’ll hook you up with some fire water and a few blankets.

  19. Nunya Bidness on February 19, 2020 at 6:33 pm

There is no doubt that the term Redskin was used as a derogatory term. However, it’s origins were based on the French interaction with Illinois Indians. The Natives themselves used color to distinguish not only the difference between whites and natives, but even the difference between differing tribes. The term was used by many native chiefs including Chief No Ears of the Little Osage tribe, and Meskwaki tribal chief Black Thunder during the War of 1812. Many words lose their meaning over the years and are usurped for other meanings. But in my opinion, too many people are offended by the term, so they should try something else. Since it’s D.C., how about the Lying Hypocrites?

do indians even know what football is?

  26. SexBad on February 19, 2020 at 6:42 pm

i can see why some people might get upset about the name redskins for a football team but i highly doubt that they are using it now for some kind of insult to Indian people, i think that when stuff like this happens it just validates the term as an insult i mean like who cares? it was a racist and name its a name for a football team

  27. Delan Carter on February 19, 2020 at 6:42 pm

They have killers, thieves, murders out here etc.., and you all worried about a got the football team name wow blow up world please hurry up!!!

I really don’t see what the problem is here. Just change the name from The Washington Redskins to The Drunk Indians.

  30. entropy fan on February 19, 2020 at 6:47 pm

im glad they got rid of the redskins name.  It’s offensive.  maybe my high school will be next.  i hate the name ‘redskins’.  i know my school was founded in 1927, but they really need to realize… its not 1927 any more.  even so, it was wrong then and its just as wrong now.  ugghhh

  31. Another OverTaxed TaxPayer on February 19, 2020 at 6:47 pm

Indians did not complain about this trademark, only professional activist groups did to make a name for themselves.

  32. Harshit Madan on February 19, 2020 at 6:48 pm

When will The Young Turks lose their trademark?

  33. TommyJay on February 19, 2020 at 6:48 pm

To not offend any of the races they should use all 4 of the races and call them the Washington Fourskins….
Now, Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson has filed a Law Suit against Scientists for using the term "Black Holes"…. seems they think it is a stereotype derogatory towards all the African American prostitutes.

  34. apburner1 on February 19, 2020 at 6:49 pm

    The Young Turks
Young Turk government of the Ottoman Empire began a systematic genocide of its Armenian citizens an unarmed Christian minority population. More than a million Armenians were exterminated through direct killing, starvation, torture, and forced death marches.

  35. Obsidian SeventyOne on February 19, 2020 at 6:51 pm

interesting that the loss of the Trademark would create the undesired effect of potentially increasing the amount of gear in the market with the offensive name.

  36. SuperAV21 on February 19, 2020 at 6:51 pm

Why do people take offense upon words, actions and gestures they don’t use at all?

  37. Brandyn Henry on February 19, 2020 at 6:52 pm

missing another point you clueless fuckheads, in the context of a current racial slur, redskin fits about as much as cowboy, no one except an illiterate dork would call a native american a redskin today. If you say redskin, the only thing i would think of is the washington redskins, race of any sort wouldn’t enter my mind, and it wouldn’t with anyone else except the couple percent that are clamoring to bend over and suck each other off about who is the least racist.

you all are the ones that are race obsessed, i couldn’t give two shits less about this drivel, what pisses me off to no end is how you respond to it, it’s worse than racism, it’s patronization.

  38. Thomas on February 19, 2020 at 6:53 pm

    The young Turks trademark:
two dead Armenians propped up on Ottoman bayonets.

  39. Rusty Shackleford on February 19, 2020 at 6:54 pm

  44. Jacob Bays on February 19, 2020 at 7:04 pm

just change it to the "Redskins Potatoes"

  45. EPLURiBusUNUM on February 19, 2020 at 7:04 pm

Everyone who jumps on this bandwagon does so because they’re seeking out a sense of moral superiority. And the ones who attack you as being a racist bigot for being against the name change, are the easiest to detect as being seekers of moral superiority. They sit atop their ivory towers and scoff at you for not being as morally enlightened them. Their criticism and vitriol acts as a means of elevating their sense of moral superiority.

  46. Alisha R on February 19, 2020 at 7:07 pm

Lol coming from The Young Turks😂😂😂

  47. Ronan Valhalla on February 19, 2020 at 7:09 pm

I’m offended by the name "RED SKINS" They should be called the "CRIMSON HIDES" and they could keep their logo and trademark.

  48. Brandyn Henry on February 19, 2020 at 7:11 pm

And lastly, the logo of the "redskin" is proud and brave, they are not mocking him, it’s a term of endearment. you just don’t have a clue in hell. historical presentism at it’s finest.

  49. Rad Dudeman on February 19, 2020 at 7:13 pm

TYT shouldn’t talk about this topic, seeing how they named themselves over the organization (Young Turks, a nationalist group in Turkey after WW1) which carried out the Armenian and Greek genocide which combined caused over 3 million deaths. Cenk Uygur also made comments in the past denying the Armenian genocide ever happened, and anytime he does a AMA on Reddit or whatever and he gets asked about it, he refuses to answer about those comments.
